New Gloucester Boutique Faces Closure Amid Disruptive Roadworks

Stefania Cuozzo, a determined entrepreneur in Gloucester, is facing the heartbreaking possibility of closing her recently opened jewellery boutique due to ongoing roadworks seriously damaging her trade. The 41-year-old, who moved to the UK from Italy six years ago, fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening Art of Shine on Southgate Street in December 2025. However, just months later, disruptive city centre roadworks have left her struggling to keep the business afloat.

Before opening her shop, Stefania built her brand by selling jewellery at markets and events while working in a pub and restaurant. After falling ill and being unable to continue in those roles, she took a courageous step to invest her limited savings into her own storefront. Her passion and resilience shone through, with steady growth in sales during typically slow retail months.

Then the unexpected road closure directly in front of her shop dramatically reduced foot traffic and income. Stefania shares, “I ask myself constantly how many more days will I be able to open the door and keep the shop running.” She describes Art of Shine as more than just a business; it is a symbol of female resilience and rebirth, inspired by the lotus flower which represents her own journey through illness to recovery.

Despite her repeated appeals for council support, she feels increasingly isolated as her business suffers. “It’s truly heartbreaking in a city that promotes small business and female entrepreneurship to see independent shops pushed to the brink,” she says.

Gloucestershire County Council acknowledges the disruption but emphasizes the roadworks are part of a wider project to improve the city’s cycle spine, aiming to create a safer, more accessible environment that will ultimately benefit local businesses. They assert that Art of Shine remains accessible and that clear signage encourages customers to continue visiting.

As Stefania fights to hold on to her dream, her story highlights the delicate balance small businesses face amidst urban development and the urgent need for greater support during such challenging transitions.
