New £5M GP Surgery and Housing Development Approved in Gloucester

Plans for a new £5 million GP surgery along with 10 new homes in Gloucester have officially been approved. The redevelopment will see the demolition of Jordan’s Brook House on North Upton Lane, Barnwood, making way for a state-of-the-art, two-storey medical centre purpose-built to serve the local community.

The proposed facility will feature 21 clinical rooms, spacious reception areas, fully accessible toilet facilities, staff offices, and dedicated rest and changing rooms for personnel. The new surgery is designed to accommodate seven GPs, four nurses, two healthcare assistants, six receptionists, approximately six administrative staff, and two managers.

Previously, Jordan’s Brook House served various Gloucestershire County Council departments before closing in 2022. Its redevelopment marks a significant investment in improving healthcare infrastructure for east Gloucester.

The site will also include eight detached homes and two semi-detached houses located at the southern portion, alongside 29 parking spaces dedicated to the new medical centre.

Local resident Phil McLellan addressed the planning committee, emphasizing the urgent need for upgraded medical facilities. “The current surgery is inadequate. The new surgery will offer improved conditions for both patients and staff and enable Hucclecote Surgery to perform minor surgical procedures,” he stated.

Gloucester Mayor Ashley Bowkett, who also represents Barnwood and Hucclecote as a County Councillor, expressed strong support for the project. “This is a much-needed enhancement to health infrastructure in the eastern part of Gloucester,” he commented, noting ongoing pressures on existing facilities.

During the committee discussion, Councillor Mark Harris highlighted the broad community backing for the plans and proposed granting permission, a motion seconded by Councillor Ian Watson. Meanwhile, Conservative Councillor Stephen Davies acknowledged the positive efforts made to refine the building’s design, layout, and parking arrangements following public feedback.

In a unanimous decision, councillors approved the proposals, paving the way for a modern healthcare centre and much-needed housing development that aims to benefit Gloucester residents for years to come.
