Neurologist Warns: Avoid These Three Activities to Reduce Stroke Risk – Including Certain Yoga Poses

Dr. Baibing Chen, a double-board-certified neurologist and epileptologist, shares crucial advice on reducing stroke risk by avoiding three specific practices. Drawing from his extensive medical expertise and firsthand experience, Dr. Chen outlines important precautions everyone should consider.

Firstly, while yoga is broadly beneficial, Dr. Chen cautions against certain poses that place the neck in extreme hyperextension or hyperflexion. These intense positions can cause vessel wall tears known as dissections, potentially leading to a stroke. “Staying mindful of your neck’s position and avoiding excessive strain during yoga is vital,” he advises.

Secondly, Dr. Chen warns about heavy weightlifting combined with breath-holding, known as the Valsalva maneuver. This technique can cause a dangerous spike in systolic blood pressure—sometimes exceeding 400 mmHg—putting immense pressure on brain blood vessels and triggering hemorrhagic strokes. Instead, he recommends using moderate weights, higher repetitions, and controlled breathing, which build muscle without extreme blood pressure surges.

Lastly, Dr. Chen advises against consuming energy drinks due to their high caffeine content and added stimulants like guarana and taurine. These ingredients can disrupt normal vascular regulation and increase the risk of dangerous heart arrhythmias. Such irregular rhythms may form clots that travel to the brain, causing strokes. He prefers simple coffee as a safer caffeine source and notes that excessive vitamin B levels in energy drinks can also cause nerve damage.

Dr. Chen’s insights emphasize the importance of informed choices in exercise, diet, and lifestyle to protect brain health and reduce stroke risk.
