For almost 20 years, the Victoria Hotel in Newnham-on-Severn has stood derelict, casting a shadow over this otherwise picturesque village. The grade II-listed former coaching inn, owned by BMJ International Limited, has remained closed since 2007, leaving locals deeply frustrated.
Residents describe the once-grand 18th-century building as a “shambles,” citing unsightly details like plastic wrapped around the chimneys and dilapidated fencing surrounding the property. Situated at the southern entrance to the High Street, the hotel’s neglected state detracts from the village’s charm rather than enhancing it.
The fencing outside the hotel has further aggravated locals, complicating access for bus users who struggle to navigate the pathway to and from the nearby bus stop. In response, a report is underway to clarify the highway boundary, which will help determine ownership and responsibilities for the surrounding land.

Green Party Councillor Beki Hoyland, representing Newnham at Gloucestershire County Council, provided an update at the recent parish council meeting on April 29. She explained that efforts are ongoing to identify the land ownership between the road and the hotel wall. A specialist in land boundaries has been appointed, and their report, expected in May, will guide future actions.
“If the report confirms the land as highway property, legal steps can be taken to remove the Heras fencing,” said Councillor Hoyland. “This won’t affect the building itself but would certainly improve that section of the High Street.”
From a planning perspective, Forest of Dean District Councillor Andy Moore revealed conflicting messages. “I was told the case was closed,” he said. “There were some plans they had become aware of but none officially submitted.” Parish Council Chairman Felix Bihlmeier insisted the issue would persist regardless, while Councillor Mike Penny urged planning officers to move forward.
“It’s been 20 years of delays,” Penny noted. “A listed building with bits of plastic around the chimneys isn’t really a solution.”
Councillor Moore acknowledged the frustration and committed to raising the matter with the head of planning at the District Council. Meanwhile, Brian Bennett of BMJ International Ltd, the hotel’s owner, has been approached for comment.
The future of the Victoria Hotel remains uncertain, but the community’s call for restoration and revitalization grows louder. Residents hope that with clearer land ownership and renewed planning efforts, the hotel once again can become a proud highlight of Newnham-on-Severn’s High Street.
