Nearly a Dozen Flood Alerts Issued Across the West Country – Full List

This weekend, parts of the West Country are under nearly a dozen flood alerts and warnings, as river levels remain high following recent rainfall. Although the Met Office forecasts a mostly dry weekend with occasional rain and drizzle, flood risks continue in several areas across the region.

The Met Office’s forecast for Saturday, December 20, predicts a largely fine day with sunny spells, though southeasterly winds will pick up, becoming windier especially in western parts, with some rain expected in Cornwall during the afternoon. Overnight, cloud cover will increase with light rain in some spots, and breezy conditions will persist around exposed coastal areas.

Sunday, December 21, will be predominantly cloudy and dull, with occasional rain and drizzle. Winds will generally lighten but remain breezy near hills and coasts, and temperatures will feel chilly under overcast skies. Early next week, conditions are expected to remain cloudy with further chances of rain and drizzle.

A recent five-day flood forecast issued on Friday, December 19, highlighted ongoing risks of localized river flooding, particularly in southern England and Yorkshire. Here are the key flood warnings currently in effect in the West Country:

  • Bristol Avon (Middle) at Bradford on Avon: Flooding is expected near properties such as the Bullpit. Rising river levels may lead to the closure of the A363 Silver Street and Town Bridge. Drivers should seek alternative routes.

  • Bristol Avon (Middle) from Melksham to Bathford (excluding Bradford on Avon): Flooding risks affect Melksham and Limpley Stoke areas.

  • Bristol Avon (Upper) from Chippenham to Melksham: River levels remain high at Great Somerford but are beginning to fall. Flooding near Reybridge is anticipated.

  • Bristol Avon (Upper) from Malmesbury to Chippenham: Similar conditions apply, with flooding potentially affecting properties near Reybridge, Seagry, and Kellaways.

  • River Avon at Strensham and Bredon: High river levels are expected to cause flooding starting December 20. Properties and roads near Mill Lane (Strensham) and Dock Lane (Bredon) are at risk.

  • River Avon at Wyre Piddle: Flooding consistent with Strensham and Bredon is forecast.

  • River Severn at Abbots Court, Deerhurst: Rising river levels pose a flooding threat lasting several days.

  • River Severn at Apperley and The Leigh: Flooding may affect Gabb Lane and nearby caravan parks.

  • River Severn at Chaceley and Haw Bridge: Properties and roads around Tirley and Chaceley, including the B4213 Church Road and Haw Bridge Road near Wainlodes Junction, face flood risks.

  • River Severn at Severn Ham, Tewkesbury: Flooding may impact properties, roads, and access to Abbey Mill.

  • Curry Moor and Hay Moor: Elevated water levels on the River Tone and Currymoor Main Drain risk flooding low-lying land and roads including Cutts Road and New Road. There’s also a threat of water overtopping Haymoor flood storage, possibly affecting Curload and Stan Moor.

Residents in affected areas should stay alert, monitor river gauges, and follow any advice from local authorities to ensure safety during this period of continued flood risk.
