Nearly a Dozen Flood Alerts Issued Across the West Country

This weekend, the West Country faces multiple flood warnings and alerts, even as the Met Office forecasts clearer and sunnier weather across the region. While Saturday and Sunday (December 20 and 21) are expected to bring only occasional rain and drizzle, several rivers continue to pose a flooding risk.

According to the Met Office, Saturday will largely be fine with sunny periods, although fresh southeasterly winds will develop, becoming windier in the western areas. Some rain is likely in Cornwall during the afternoon, with cloudier conditions and occasional spots of rain overnight. Winds will ease but remain breezy along exposed coasts.

Sunday’s weather is predicted to be mostly cloudy and dull, with intermittent rain and drizzle. Winds will be lighter but still breezy near hills and coastal regions, and temperatures will feel chilly under overcast skies. Early next week looks to stay cloudy and dull, with possible rain and drizzle continuing.

On Friday, December 19, flood forecasts were issued covering the next five days, highlighting local river flooding risks in parts of southern England, including the West Country. Key flood warnings and alerts include:

  • Bristol Avon (middle) near Bradford on Avon: Rising river levels could close the A363 Silver Street and Town Bridge at Bullpit; alternative routes advised.
  • Bristol Avon (middle) from Melksham to Bathford: Flooding expected near Melksham and Limpley Stoke properties.
  • Bristol Avon (upper) from Chippenham to Melksham and Malmesbury to Chippenham: High river levels beginning to fall but flooding still forecast, notably near Reybridge, Seagry, and Kellaways.
  • River Avon at Strensham and Bredon: Flooding likely affecting roads and properties near Mill Lane and Dock Lane.
  • River Severn at multiple locations including Abbots Court, Deerhurst, Apperley, The Leigh, Chaceley, Haw Bridge, and Severn Ham, Tewkesbury: High river levels expected to cause flooding impacting roads, properties, caravan parks, and access to Abbey Mill.
  • Curry Moor and Hay Moor: Rising river levels affecting low-lying land and roads near the River Tone, with specific roads such as Cutts Road and New Road vulnerable to flooding. There is also a risk of water overtopping the Haymoor flood storage area, impacting Curload and Stan Moor.

Residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed, prepare for possible travel disruptions, and follow any instructions from local authorities.
