‘Near Misses’ Prompt Urgent Call for Safety Overhaul at Stonehouse Pedestrian Crossing

Safety concerns have escalated at a pedestrian crossing on Bristol Road in Stonehouse, with parents escorting children to a nearby nursery reporting alarming near-miss incidents. Motorists have been observed running red lights at the crossing leading to Avenue Terrace, raising fears among local residents.

Town Councillor Simon Macgregor highlighted the dangers, emphasizing that this four-lane stretch of road is particularly difficult to cross due to the absence of a central refuge island. Visibility is frequently compromised as large goods vehicles often obscure the traffic signals, increasing the risk of accidents.

Gloucestershire County Council is currently reviewing proposed safety improvements for the site. However, Councillor Macgregor stressed the urgent need for implementation, noting that months have passed since road safety managers first announced plans were under assessment.

“While progress is being made with a preferred safety option agreed upon and an interim design under review, the risks remain,” said Cllr Macgregor. “Families visiting the nursery continue to face dangers from red-light runners and near misses. The crossing’s layout issues—including no central refuge, limited crossing time, and poor visibility due to high-sided vehicles—persist.”

He added, “We are eager for final details on the safety plan and how it will resolve these critical concerns. It’s imperative that this progress results in concrete action without further delay.”

Gloucestershire County Council has been contacted for comment regarding the timeline and specifics of the safety enhancements.
