Natural Compound in Rice and Coffee May Help Relax Arteries, Study Finds

Rice and coffee might seem like unlikely allies, but new research from Japan’s Toho University reveals that both contain ferulic acid, a naturally occurring compound that may help relax arteries and support cardiovascular health.

Using pig arteries—which closely resemble human arteries—the researchers explored how ferulic acid affects arterial function. Found naturally in rice, coffee, and various vegetables, ferulic acid appears to prevent artery constriction through multiple mechanisms.

The study uncovered two significant effects. First, ferulic acid blocks calcium from entering muscle cells, which normally triggers arterial contraction. While occasional narrowing is typical, excessive contraction can cause coronary artery spasms, leading to elevated blood pressure and increasing the risk of heart attacks.

Secondly, even when calcium levels were unaffected, ferulic acid helped prevent artery tightening by inhibiting activation of a specific protein crucial for constriction. This dual action suggests ferulic acid could play an important role in maintaining artery flexibility.

Although this research was conducted on animal models and requires further human studies, the findings offer promising insights. Lead researcher Dr. Kento Yoshioka notes, “Because ferulic acid is plant-based and considered safe, it may have potential as a health food ingredient or even as a foundation for future heart medications.”

Heart attacks remain a serious concern, with roughly 100,000 hospital admissions annually in the UK alone. According to the British Heart Foundation, that equates to one heart attack every five minutes. Symptoms often include chest pain but can vary widely.

The NHS emphasizes the urgency of treatment: a heart attack occurs when blood supply to the heart is suddenly blocked, usually by a clot, which can cause severe and potentially fatal heart muscle damage. Immediate medical attention—calling 999—is critical.

This study highlights the potential of everyday foods like rice and coffee as sources of beneficial compounds that may support cardiovascular health and prevent arterial issues linked to heart disease.
