National Grid Undertakes Major Electricity Supply Upgrade for 55,000 Homes in Cheltenham

National Grid Electricity Distribution has launched a significant £4 million project to reinforce and upgrade the electricity supply serving more than 55,000 customers in Cheltenham and its surrounding areas. This essential work will proceed in two main phases throughout the coming year, ensuring a more reliable and resilient power network for the region.

The first phase began on June 2 and is set to run until August 12. It involves repainting and refurbishing overhead line towers—a crucial step to protect the steel structures from corrosion and extend their service life. During this period, residents in Kingsditch, Springbank, Swindon Village, and Wyman’s Brook may observe the ongoing maintenance work. Each tower will be carefully cleaned and jet-washed, primed with yellow paint, and finished with a protective grey coat. To maintain safety and operational continuity, only half of each tower is painted at a time, allowing circuits to be safely switched as needed.

This phase is weather-dependent, requiring dry and calm conditions with suitable temperatures, so daily work schedules will be adjusted according to the latest forecasts. This approach ensures safety and quality throughout the refurbishment process.

The second phase, known as reconductoring, will continue until June 30, 2026. It involves replacing the overhead wires that transmit electricity across the region. This stage will bring an increased presence of vehicles, equipment, and contractors. National Grid has implemented designated work zones and safe platforms to protect both the workforce and the public. The project team has strategically planned conductor pulls and equipment placement to minimize disruption, especially in public areas where new conductors will pass overhead.

This critical investment aims to strengthen Cheltenham’s electricity infrastructure, reducing the likelihood of power outages and supporting current and future demand growth.

Katriya Ruxton from National Grid Electricity Distribution’s Major Projects team commented, “We appreciate the patience and understanding of local residents during this vital work. While some short-term disruption is unavoidable, the improvements will provide long-lasting benefits. By proactively upgrading the network, we are securing a safe and reliable electricity supply for thousands of homes and businesses in Cheltenham for years to come.”
