A regular lottery player from Gloucestershire was stunned to discover he had become a millionaire overnight. The National Lottery confirmed that the family man, whose identity remains confidential, won £1,000,000 in the Lotto Guaranteed Millionaire Raffle on Saturday, July 4.
While his name and exact location remain undisclosed, one hint about the winner is that he is an amateur golfer—a detail that might not narrow the search much, as Gloucestershire boasts around 40 golf clubs.
Adding a touch of serendipity, the first song he heard on the radio after learning of his win was Dire Straits’ “Money For Nothing.” Instead of splurging on a lavish celebration, his first purchase was a practical hot water tap with a filter.

The special Lotto draw included a unique Millionaire Raffle code on every ticket, with 10 lucky winners each taking home £1 million.
He discovered his win early Sunday morning at 6:30 am when checking his ticket online, initially thinking he’d only entered a raffle to win the prize alongside a £1 win on the main Lotto draw. A call to the lottery hotline confirmed he was the actual millionaire.
Reflecting on his newfound fortune, the winner said, “It still feels surreal. The win means I now have financial security for the family, and that’s everything to me. To think the first song on the radio afterwards was ‘Money For Nothing’, you couldn’t make it up!”

Recent changes to the Lotto mean each £2 line now offers two chances to win, significantly increasing the odds. Annual millionaire winners are expected to rise from approximately 140 to around 345, and the overall chance of winning any prize has improved from 1 in 9.3 to 1 in 4.9.
Players who match all six numbers in either round still win the jackpot, which is shared across rounds. This adjustment increases the likelihood of winning, though it also raises the possibility of sharing the prize.
The Lotto Millionaire Raffle has been reintroduced for select draws, and UK players can now also participate in Powerball, a new game with jackpots starting at £300 million. While the odds of winning the jackpot remain daunting at 1 in 292 million, players have a 1 in 14 chance of winning any prize, with jackpots rolling over until claimed, occasionally reaching staggering amounts in the US, including over $1 billion.
