In a harrowing experience that changed my perspective forever, I found myself trapped for three terrifying days amid a sudden military coup in South Sudan. As violence erupted and the government faltered, the situation rapidly deteriorated, leaving many like me caught in the chaos. Despite the dangers, the resilience and determination of the people fueled my resolve to return.
Now, I am going back to South Sudan—not as a bystander, but to coordinate the UN World Food Programme’s emergency response. The country remains devastated by ongoing conflict and humanitarian crises, with millions facing hunger and displacement. It’s a daunting mission, but one I embrace wholeheartedly, driven by the urgent need to provide life-saving aid and support the communities striving to rebuild amid the turmoil.
Returning to a war-torn nation is not a decision taken lightly. Yet, witnessing firsthand the impact of conflict and the crucial role humanitarian efforts can play has inspired me to stand alongside those affected. Through coordinated action and unwavering commitment, we hope to bring relief and hope to a region that has endured so much hardship.
