My Mum Died in a Car Crash – New Rules for Drivers Over 70 Could Have Saved Her

Last summer, my 79-year-old mother, Geraldine Gibson, tragically lost her life in a car accident in Cornwall. It was a devastating event that shattered our family. Reflecting on what happened, I can’t help but believe that new, stricter rules for drivers over the age of 70 might have prevented this tragedy.

As people age, their driving abilities can decline due to factors like slower reflexes, diminishing eyesight, and other health issues. Yet, many older drivers continue to drive without mandatory reassessments or updated safety checks. My mother was an experienced driver, but perhaps if there had been regular fitness-to-drive tests or refresher courses targeted at seniors, the accident could have been avoided.

I urge policymakers to consider introducing new regulations such as compulsory medical assessments and driving tests for elderly drivers. These measures could enhance road safety not only for seniors but for all road users. My mum’s death was a painful reminder that aging behind the wheel comes with real risks, and it’s time to address them seriously.
