A devastating house fire in the early hours of Boxing Day claimed the lives of a mother and her two young children in Gloucestershire. The mother, a fashion designer, and her children, aged seven and four, tragically died when their Cotswold stone cottage on Brimscombe Hill near Stroud was consumed by fire.
Her husband, a serving officer with Gloucestershire Police, bravely attempted to save them but was forced to retreat due to the intense blaze. He was treated at the hospital following his rescue efforts.
Detective Superintendent Ian Fletcher reported that the family was awakened by the fire and tried to reach the children’s bedroom at the rear of the house. The father smashed a bathroom window to reach the children from outside but was unable to enter. Efforts to re-enter the house via the bathroom window and subsequently through the front and back doors were also unsuccessful because the fire had rapidly spread.
