Most Brits Delay Dementia Help, Mistaking Symptoms for Normal Ageing

Experts emphasize the critical need to recognize dementia symptoms that extend beyond normal ageing, as a recent Alzheimer’s Society survey found that 85% of Britons hesitate to seek medical advice promptly. Early diagnosis is essential for accessing the right support and treatment.

The survey, involving 1,100 participants, revealed that only about one-third report signs of dementia to their GP within a month of noticing symptoms in themselves or loved ones. Alarmingly, just 15% sought help immediately, while the vast majority—75%—delayed professional consultation.

Many respondents cited uncertainty over whether the symptoms indicated dementia or typical ageing as a reason for silence. The charity highlighted that one in three people (33%) who notice potential dementia signs wait over a month before voicing concerns. Another 11% admitted to not discussing symptoms at all despite recognizing them.

This hesitation leads to significant delays, with nearly 25% waiting more than six months to consult a healthcare professional. Early signs such as trouble following conversations, concentration problems, and memory lapses are often mistaken for normal age-related issues like slight hearing loss or occasional forgetfulness.

The survey also uncovered that 16% actively avoid seeking a diagnosis out of fear it might affect personal relationships. Additionally, 44% worry about being patronised by caregivers or family members who might “talk down” to them.

Kate Lee, former CEO of the Alzheimer’s Society, called for openness and direct conversation about dementia. “We can’t continue to avoid the ’d' word – we need to face dementia head on,” she said.

The charity advises anyone noticing unusual symptoms to use their checklist and discuss concerns with a GP promptly to ensure timely support.
