Morrisons has announced the permanent closure of 16 supermarkets as part of a broader bid to streamline operations and reduce costs. The closures, set to begin tomorrow, include some Morrisons Daily stores that also house Post Offices. While acknowledging the inconvenience this may cause, the company has pledged to review Post Office services in the affected areas and to seek replacements for the vacated positions.
This move is part of Morrisons' renewal programme, which aims to trim expenses and drive growth. In addition to the store closures, the plan involves shutting 52 in-store cafes, 100 other services including florists and pharmacies, as well as 35 meat and fish counters. Reports from Metro indicate that this may put the jobs of 396 employees at risk, although the company has stated that it will seek to redeploy affected staff.
Morrisons CEO Rami Baitiéh addressed the closures, expressing that they are necessary for the company’s renewal and growth plans. While highlighting the positive outlook for most Morrisons Cafes, he noted specific local challenges in some locations, leading to regrettable closures and reallocation of the space.
