Jason Potter, a 34-year-old former Winchcombe Street resident in Cheltenham, has been sentenced to six years in prison following a destructive crime spree across the town. He was convicted of eight residential burglaries, an assault causing actual bodily harm, an assault on an emergency worker, and criminal damage.
During the trial at Gloucester Crown Court on May 13, prosecutors revealed how Potter used a moped to swiftly travel between burglary sites while wearing a distinctive outfit: navy Adidas trainers, a motorbike helmet, and a Puma rucksack. CCTV footage captured him attempting to avoid cameras before breaking into homes and fleeing the scenes.
Police linked Potter to the crimes through CCTV evidence and the discovery of stolen items at his address. One notable recovery was a blue Pinnacle bicycle found locked outside Potter’s residence, which was promptly returned to its rightful owner after a victim identified it via a police Facebook post.

The victims provided heart-wrenching impact statements, describing ongoing fear and anxiety following the burglaries. One victim said, “For the first few nights, I was not sleeping well at all. Every time I returned home, I dreaded finding someone inside. I felt like I was living under siege.” Another shared, “I haven’t slept properly since. It’s pitch black where I live, and I worry—if Potter could break in here, who else might try?”
Investigating officer PC Hancock emphasized the serious repercussions of Potter’s actions. “These crimes caused havoc in Cheltenham. We understand the profound effects burglary can have and were determined to deliver justice. Potter’s imprisonment should bring some closure and underline how seriously we treat these offenses.”
Jason Potter’s conviction highlights the determination of local law enforcement to protect their communities and ensure offenders face the consequences of their actions.
