Renowned horticulturist Monty Don has shared his unique perspective on gardening during the winter months, revealing that for him, Boxing Day signals the start of a new gardening year despite the season’s inherent difficulties.
During his appearance on the BBC Gardeners' World Magazine Podcast, the 70-year-old presenter reflected on the natural slowdown gardening faces in winter due to short daylight hours and unfavorable weather conditions. He explained that with daylight stretching only from about 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., outdoor gardening activities become limited.
Monty emphasized the futility of pushing on during periods when garden work is minimal. He said, “Boxing Day is effectively the beginning of the new gardening year for me.” Addressing whether his winter break was planned, he noted, “It doesn’t make any sense to struggle on our very heavy soil, making a mess and compacting it further.”

Highlighting practical gardening wisdom, he added, “For purely horticultural practicality, less is often more.” Monty pointed out that tasks often missed in December can be effectively tackled in January or February if planned well, making November a crucial month for preparation.
Beyond gardening routines, Monty also opened up about his personal challenges with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which affects many people in the UK. “December can be a low time of year for me psychologically, but my spirits always rise when we get to Boxing Day,” he shared in an interview with Gardeners' World Magazine.
To lift his mood, Monty turns to indoor gardening activities during the festive season. He explained, “Even if it’s filthy weather, I always do some gardening — I go to the potting shed and sow tomatoes, chillies, and onions. It gives me the sense that we are working towards spring.”
When weather permits, he begins pruning his apple orchard between Christmas and New Year, a task he enjoys for its quiet focus. “I’m very happy doing that job in the dry, cold weather,” Monty said.
