Monty Don, the face of the BBC’s cherished gardening programme Gardeners' World, has announced he will be stepping down as the show’s lead presenter after more than 20 years.
The 70-year-old has become one of the nation’s most recognisable gardening personalities, endearing himself to viewers with his calm and approachable presentation style. Since taking on the lead role in 2003, Monty has filmed the series initially from Berryfields before moving production to his own Herefordshire garden, Longmeadow, where filming has taken place for the past 16 years.
His departure signifies the conclusion of a significant chapter in the programme’s history, which has become a Friday evening favourite across generations.

In a statement, Monty Don reflected on his time with Gardeners' World: “I have decided that the current series of Gardeners' World will be my last. I began hosting the programme 23 years ago, first at Berryfields and for the past 16 years here in my own garden, Longmeadow.
“Over approximately seven hundred episodes, I have had the honour of sharing my passion for gardens and gardening with a devoted and knowledgeable audience. The connection with millions, not only in Britain but globally, who share a love of gardens, plants, and the natural world, is something I have always treasured. I believe this connection lies at the heart of a life well lived.”
He added, “I’ve enjoyed the craft of programme-making, and working week in, week out as part of a superb BBC team has been deeply rewarding. However, now feels like the right time for a change.
“I look forward to continuing my work with the BBC on other projects and exploring new opportunities. There are more books to write and more programmes to create. And, naturally, I will continue gardening here at Longmeadow, with my dog by my side.”
The BBC has confirmed that Monty Don will remain on screen until the end of this year.
Monty shared the news with his followers via a heartfelt video on his personal Instagram page, where he appeared alongside his dog. The response was flood of messages expressing gratitude and support. Fellow broadcaster Kate Thornton described the announcement as “a horticultural tragedy,” thanking him for his passion and knowledge. BBC presenter Zoe Ball wrote, “Our Fridays will not be the same without you, but heartfelt thanks for all the magic and wisdom you have shared. Enjoy your next adventures.” Fans expressed sadness but also appreciation for the joy and insight Monty brought to the series throughout his long tenure.
