Newly released police bodycam and CCTV footage captures the arrest of two jewellery thieves attempting to escape by train following a £20,000 robbery in Cheltenham. The men targeted Beards Jewellers on November 13, before trying to make their getaway to Birmingham.
The CCTV footage shows the pair entering the shop—one dressed in black distracting an employee by asking to see items, while the other, wearing a blue jacket, swiftly reaches a display cabinet to take jewellery unnoticed.
Police bodycam clips record officers detaining Bernard Casey, 34, at Cheltenham Spa train station. Meanwhile, Patrick Cauley, also 34, was apprehended on a train bound for Birmingham after being stopped on the platform. Both men are from Birmingham.

According to police reports, Cauley and Casey visited Beards Jewellers with the intent to steal. Cauley requested larger bangles while Casey covertly pocketed two bangles worth over £8,000. They left the store and got into a taxi that dropped them at the train station.
Alert shop staff quickly informed police, who identified the taxi firm and tracked the suspects. Cauley had already boarded the train, which was later stopped in Worcester by British Transport Police and West Mercia Police, facilitating Cauley’s arrest.
While some stolen jewellery was recovered, the valuable bangles remain missing.
On December 18, Gloucestershire’s Gloucester Crown Court sentenced both men to one year in prison, with a minimum of six months to serve. During sentencing, Cauley expressed deep remorse, with his lawyer citing mismanagement of medication and alcohol as contributing factors. Casey’s defense highlighted mental health issues and negative influences.
PC Euan Edwards, the investigating officer, commended the joint police efforts leading to the arrests and underscored the impact of shoplifting on businesses. “This investigation showcases Gloucestershire Constabulary’s commitment to tackling retail crime and bringing offenders to justice,” he said.
