Minimizing Dementia Risk: Key Health Conditions to Consider

It’s crucial to be aware of the “sneaky” health conditions that could elevate the risk of developing dementia, as emphasized by an NHS doctor. With a significant number of individuals living with dementia and the projected increase in cases, understanding the critical factors associated with cognitive deterioration is imperative.

Genetics and age play a role in dementia risk, but lifestyle choices can also significantly impact it. The insights shared by Doctor Karan Rajan - known as Dr. Raj - on TikTok were based on a recent scientific study and a 2024 Lancet commission report. Dr. Raj noted that nearly half of dementia cases could potentially be prevented by addressing specific risk factors, five of which he highlighted as particularly deceptive.

One of the notable concerns he raised was the link between high cholesterol, particularly LDL cholesterol, and the onset of dementia. Addressing high cholesterol levels through dietary adjustments and, if necessary, statins may help reduce this risk.

Additionally, Dr. Raj stressed the importance of monitoring blood pressure, addressing hearing loss, seeking regular vision checks, and managing type 2 diabetes to minimize the risk of dementia. Lifestyle changes such as reducing salt consumption, moderating alcohol intake, quitting smoking, and maintaining optimal ear and eye health were advised as proactive measures.

It’s crucial for individuals to be proactive in managing these health conditions to potentially lower their risk of developing dementia.
