The Owen family, known from the popular Channel 5 show Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales, recently shared a heartfelt update about the changing dynamics on their family farm. At just 17, Miles Owen has started taking on more responsibilities as his father, Clive, gradually slows down.
Reuben Owen, 21, has risen to prominence through the series showcasing his work in groundwork and plant hire services alongside his parents Amanda and Clive. In a recent episode aired on May 27, viewers saw Miles joining Reuben to help manage farm duties, underscoring his growing commitment to the family business.
Miles spoke candidly about his increasing role on the farm, highlighting his earlier involvement with caring for chickens and now expanding to tending cows and sheep. He shared, “I really enjoyed growing up on the farm. One of my jobs was doing the chickens, collecting the eggs, looking after them, feeding them. I’m doing more work with the cows and the sheep at the moment.”

He explained how he balances his time between aiding his father and supporting Reuben with his machinery company: “I’ve talked to Reuben about the digging side and me helping more, getting more involved with his company, which I wouldn’t mind at all. But I’ve got to balance it, because Dad’s getting on and he’s slowing down a bit. So, I’ve got to help Dad when it’s needed and I can’t leave him to manage. Then, when Reuben needs it and he gets stuck, I need to go and help him.”
This shift in family roles comes shortly after Clive openly reflected on aging and the need to “pass on the baton” to the next generation. Clive’s sentiments were captured on Channel 4’s Our Farm Next Door, where the Owen family documents their ongoing efforts to restore Anty John’s farm despite numerous challenges.
Watching Miles confidently take charge of the lawn mower for the first time was an emotional milestone for Clive, who remarked, “They’re grown-up these lads, and it’s good for them to take over these jobs. Miles is a young man now so the mowing is for him.” He concluded with a hopeful outlook: “It’s time to pass on the baton and let them do more and more, and that is how it is. I am here to watch over them and annoy them, and we will get there in the end.”
Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales continues to air on Tuesdays at 8 pm on Channel 5, with all episodes available for streaming on My5.
