Mickleton Rangers Clinch Minor Charity Cup with Dominant 4-0 Triumph

Mickleton Rangers secured the Cheltenham League Minor Charity Cup title with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Shurdington Rovers at Kayte Lane on Friday evening.

The Division One champions drew first blood early on when Tom Carwardine skillfully turned his marker from a throw-in and unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box, leaving goalkeeper Kyle Price with only a faint touch as the ball found the bottom corner.

Though Shurdington Rovers enjoyed spells of pressure and controlled possession at times, Mickleton doubled their lead in the 36th minute. Carwardine drove confidently into the box and finished securely, putting his side ahead 2-0 against the run of play.

Just a minute later, Mickleton widened the gap. After winning possession in midfield, the ball fell to Oliver Miller on the right edge of the box, who struck a superb shot that left the goalkeeper with no chance.

Shurdington had dominated the first half in possession, chances, and corners, but Mickleton goalkeeper Tim Wheatcroft stood firm, repeatedly denying their efforts.

The second half saw Shurdington push forward aggressively in search of a goal. Ryan Smith came close from a corner, but Wheatcroft made another crucial save.

Mickleton remained lethal on the counterattack and nearly added a fourth in the 60th minute when Harrison Jacobs capitalized on a misplaced pass, but his early strike was comfortably saved.

The decisive fourth goal came in the 73rd minute. A clearance upfield sowed confusion among Shurdington’s defense and goalkeeper, allowing Edward Waller to set up Miller, who outpaced his marker and calmly finished to seal the victory.

Despite continued pressure and possession dominance from Shurdington in the closing stages, they were unable to break through Mickleton’s resolute defense.

After the match, two-goal hero Tom Carwardine reflected: “We went into this final knowing we had already won the league, so we just wanted to enjoy it. We’ve had a lot of injuries, but everyone gave their all — even the lads on the bench carrying knocks. We showed great heart and got the job done.”

Commenting on his second goal, Carwardine added, “It was similar to a goal I scored away at Shurdington earlier in the season. I trusted myself to cut inside and whip it to the far post, and thankfully it went in off the post.”

These two teams met twice before the final — a league draw that secured the title for Mickleton while confirming Shurdington as runners-up.

Shurdington now prepare to face FC Wickhamford in the Senior Charity Cup final at Whaddon Road this Wednesday evening, kick-off at 7pm.
