Michail Antonio Reflects on Cheltenham Town Debut at Elland Road

Before rising to prominence as West Ham United’s leading Premier League goalscorer and representing Jamaica internationally, Michail Antonio experienced a formative loan spell at Cheltenham Town. At just 18, having been signed from non-league Tooting & Mitcham by Reading, Antonio was loaned to the then League One side managed by Martin Allen.

Cheltenham were struggling near the foot of the table when Antonio was abruptly introduced into the first team for his EFL debut against Leeds United at Elland Road. Fellow Reading loanee Nicholas Bignall joined him in Cheltenham’s front line, signalling an ambitious partnership for the young forwards.

Antonio fondly remembers the stark contrast in atmosphere, telling FourFourTwo: “I went from playing in front of 200 to 500 people at Tooting to 20,000 people at Elland Road in the space of six months. Unbelievable.”

He started the match with considerable flair, showcasing his skills on the wing and excelling in set-piece duties. However, after 28 minutes, his debut was abruptly halted due to a serious injury: a tear to three ankle ligaments.

Following his substitution, with Marley Watkins coming on, Leeds secured a 2-0 victory thanks to a second-half double from Jonny Howson. The opposition would later fall short in the play-offs against Millwall that season.

Antonio faced a five-week recovery, but upon regaining fitness, he returned to contribute in eight more matches for Cheltenham, starting six of them. Despite his individual promise, Cheltenham could only muster two victories during his time, ultimately suffering relegation after a 1-1 home draw with Carlisle United.

Reflecting on this challenging period, Antonio shared with Gloucestershire Live, “Being here at Cheltenham has shown me the real life of football.”

Following his stint with Cheltenham, Antonio was loaned to Southampton in League One the next season. He gradually established himself within Reading’s first team but subsequently embarked on further loan moves to Colchester United and Sheffield Wednesday-the latter leading to a permanent transfer in 2012.

His career continued to ascend with a £1.5 million move to Nottingham Forest in 2014, where he was named Player of the Year for the 2014/15 season. The following year, he made a significant transfer to West Ham United for £7 million.

Over a decade at West Ham, Antonio made over 300 appearances, scored 83 goals, and played a vital role in the club’s UEFA Europa Conference League triumph in 2022/23. Despite a serious road traffic accident in December 2024, he returned to international action with Jamaica during the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

While called up to the England squad in 2016 and 2017, Antonio never made an appearance for his country of birth, instead debuting for Jamaica in 2021. In March 2026, continuing his professional journey, the 36-year-old moved to Al-Sailiya in Qatar.

Cheltenham Town’s history with Reading loanees is notable, with several players including Michael Thorp, Nathan Tyson, and others passing through on loan. Defender Pierce Sweeney is a current Robins player and a graduate of the Reading academy, underscoring the ongoing connection between the clubs.
