The Met Office has confirmed that temperatures in Gloucestershire are set to rise to around 26°C by Friday, May 22, offering a warm spell just in time for the late May bank holiday weekend. Despite the surge in temperature, officials have not yet declared an official heatwave, amidst ongoing speculation.
Earlier in the week, cooler conditions are expected to prevail with temperatures lingering in the mid to high teens. The start of next week looks unsettled, with predictions of cloud cover and rain contrasting sharply with the sunny outlook for the upcoming weekend.
A high-pressure system is projected to settle over the region by the end of the week, bringing clearer skies and a significant rise in temperatures. By Friday morning, Gloucester is forecast to hit 20°C, climbing to 25°C by the afternoon, with temperatures holding steady in the low 20s into the evening. Light winds and predominantly clear skies are expected, marking a welcome break from the recent days of showers and overcast weather.

Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the extent of the high-pressure system’s influence. “The challenge lies in pinpointing the exact location of the high pressure by the end of the week,” he explained. “While it’s clear that high pressure will become more dominant across the country, leading to settled conditions, it’s difficult to predict precisely how warm it will get.”
The Met Office emphasizes that an official heatwave requires temperatures to reach or exceed 27°C for three consecutive days — a threshold Gloucestershire has yet to meet in the current forecast. However, temperatures from May 21 to May 30 are expected to be above the seasonal average, promising a notably warmer end to May than usual.
As the region prepares for warmer weather, residents can anticipate fine, dry conditions driven by the incoming high pressure, marking a welcome shift from the chillier start to the week.
