Met Office Issues Severe Weather Warning as Gloucestershire Faces a Day of Heavy Rain and Disruption

Gloucestershire is bracing for a day of continuous rain on Monday, December 1, as the Met Office issues a severe weather warning for sections of the county. A yellow alert is in effect from midnight on Monday until 3 a.m. Tuesday, particularly covering most of the Forest of Dean, along with Lydney and Dursley.

In Coleford, light rain will begin late Sunday at 11 p.m., intensifying to heavy rain between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Monday. This will be followed by lighter rainfall until 1 p.m., when heavy showers return until 10 p.m., tapering off to light rain again until early Tuesday morning.

Although areas like Gloucester, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, and much of the Cotswolds fall outside the warning zone, rain is still expected to persist throughout Monday.

Meanwhile, South Wales is under a more severe amber warning for the entire day, with heavy rainfall predicted to accumulate between 100 and 120 mm in higher elevations. The warning extends to parts of the Bristol Channel, reaching the border with the Forest of Dean.

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Mike Silverstone explains, “Heavy rain will sweep across South Wales from late Sunday through Monday. While rainfall amounts will vary, the highest totals are expected in the uplands. Surrounding regions may experience smaller but significant rainfalls, posing risks of flooding and disruption.”

Additional yellow warnings cover wider areas including southwest and northwest England, as well as central and northern Wales, where travel disruption and power outages are possible.

The warnings emphasize the risk of flooding, fast-flowing or deep floodwater, and dangers to life, especially in amber warning zones.

Forecast details include:

  • Sunday night: Increasingly unsettled with strengthening winds and widespread rain, especially heavy in western and elevated areas.
  • Monday: A dull, damp day with continuing heavy rain and strong southwesterly winds, particularly near the English Channel coasts. Temperatures will reach a high of around 14°C.
  • Tuesday to Thursday: Changeable weather with scattered showers, sunny spells, and breezy conditions mostly in coastal and highland regions.

Residents are advised to stay informed of weather updates and prepare for possible travel disruptions and power outages caused by the persistent heavy rain.
