Met Office issues amber wildfire weather warning as temperatures rise in Gloucestershire

The Met Office has issued an amber wildfire warning across most of the UK due to persistently warm weather. This warning covers most of England, including London, Kent’s Dover, and Wiltshire, extending into Northern Ireland and southern Scotland on Wednesday.

After a prolonged period of warm weather, temperatures are expected to reach 22C on Friday. Fire crews are urging the public to act responsibly to prevent wildfires.

In Gloucestershire, temperatures are forecast to peak at 22C on Friday, with unbroken sunshine over the weekend and into next week. Daytime highs are expected to reach 18C/16C on Saturday and Sunday, and 15C to 17C on Monday and Tuesday.

Kathryn Chalk, a meteorologist at the Met Office, highlighted the ongoing likelihood of wildfire conditions due to strong winds and dry, warm weather. The amber fire danger rating extends across England, Northern Ireland, and southern Scotland on Wednesday. She also mentioned the relief brought by showers moving into the far South West, but dry weather is expected to persist on Friday and Saturday, extending further north across western Scotland.

The London Fire Brigade emphasized the potential for wildfires in the capital despite not experiencing peak summer temperatures. They urged caution in using disposable barbecues and proper disposal of cigarettes, matches, and litter to prevent fire hazards.

As the weather warms up, the Met Office’s issued amber wildfire warning for London will remain in place for the rest of the week. The London Fire Brigade urged the public to avoid open space and balcony barbecues, including disposable ones, and to be cautious in rubbish disposal and cigarette disposal.

Current conditions indicate a dry and bright day with plenty of sunshine, with easterly winds persisting and becoming windy along southern coasts and parts of Devon and Cornwall. The overnight forecast includes increasing cloudiness, scattered showers, and warm conditions in the sunshine. The outlook for the weekend predicts warm and sunny conditions with slightly cooler temperatures.
