Met Office Confirms Gloucestershire Heatwave with Temperatures Soaring to 29°C

Residents of Gloucestershire are set to experience a significant heatwave as temperatures climb steadily from Monday, June 16, through to Sunday. Daily highs will reach up to 29°C on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures ranging between 24°C on Tuesday and 26°C by the weekend.

Expect abundant sunshine throughout the period, with clear skies and no rain forecast. Overnight lows will remain mild, not dropping below 11°C today and staying around 14°C midweek through the weekend.

This heatwave will surpass the warmth of many southern European destinations. Temperatures in southern England are projected to peak at 32°C on Saturday, with most areas exceeding the heatwave threshold before the week concludes.

Officially, a heatwave in the UK is declared when an area experiences temperatures above a set threshold—varying from 25°C to 28°C—for three consecutive days. In Gloucestershire, this threshold stands at 27°C, which will be exceeded on Thursday (29°C), Friday (28°C), and Saturday (28°C).

London, where the threshold is 28°C, is forecast to reach 29°C on Thursday, rising to 31°C on Friday and an intense 32°C on Saturday.

Met Office meteorologist Grahame Madge explained, “The rising temperatures this week are mainly due to sunny, home-grown weather. However, as the weekend approaches, warmer air from southern Europe will feed into the UK.”

He added, “A low-pressure system to the west and high-pressure to the east will channel this warm air across the country.”

This heatwave is expected to outstrip temperatures in popular holiday destinations such as Lisbon and Barcelona, both forecast to reach 29°C on Saturday, and Nice in France, which may climb to 30°C. Nevertheless, forecasters warn that localized heavy showers may occur by week’s end if humidity rises.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wisson stated, “By the weekend, heatwave thresholds could be met across many areas. While London and eastern England are likely to see the highest temperatures, regions including the Midlands, parts of east Wales, and low-lying areas near the Peak District could also experience heatwave conditions.”

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert added, “A high-pressure area over southern England will expand across much of the UK midweek. Before that, wet and windy weather is likely to affect the far northwest but warmth will persist in the south and east.”

Weather outlook:

  • Today: Low cloud, mist, and fog will clear rapidly in the morning, leading to a fine day with long sunny spells and light winds. High of 21°C.

  • Tonight: Dry conditions with ample sunshine early evening, clear skies overnight with some western low cloud and patchy mist over the Moors. Mild and light winds. Low of 11°C.

  • Tuesday: Grey and misty starts in some areas with low cloud affecting North Devon and Cornwall during the day. Otherwise, warm sunshine develops with light winds. High of 21°C.

  • Wednesday to Friday: Increasingly settled as high pressure builds from the southwest, bringing light winds and prolonged warm sunshine. Temperatures will continue to rise, with a few showers possible on Friday.
