Men Urged to Recognize 5 Key Symptoms of Male Breast Cancer

A UK doctor has issued an urgent reminder to men to be vigilant about five symptoms of breast cancer that are often overlooked. While breast cancer in men is rare, it still impacts around 390 men annually in the UK, and early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes.

Dr. Suraj Kukadia, known as Dr. Sooj on TikTok, shared this important information in a video aimed at raising awareness. He emphasized, “Men can get breast cancer too. It is not just a cancer that affects women.” Dr. Kukadia recounted how he recently diagnosed one of his male patients with breast cancer, highlighting the emotional impact and urgency of early diagnosis.

Dr. Sooj outlined the five key symptoms men should watch for:

  1. Lumps in the Chest or Armpits: Any lump or swelling in the breast area or armpit, where lymph nodes may enlarge, should be checked.
  2. Nipple Discharge: Any unusual fluid leaking from the nipples, whether clear, bloody, or another color.
  3. Sores or Ulcers on the Chest: Persistent sores or ulcers may indicate an underlying lump, especially if the area has been left untreated.
  4. Changes in Chest Size or Shape: Noticeable alterations to the size or contour of either breast could signal a problem.
  5. Nipple Changes: This includes inversion (the nipple turning inward), rashes resembling eczema, dry skin, or a lump behind the nipple.

Dr. Sooj cautioned that while these symptoms don’t automatically mean cancer, they warrant prompt medical evaluation.

According to Cancer Research UK, breast cancer in men remains rare compared to women, who experience over 56,000 cases annually. Nevertheless, the risk is real and can be effectively managed with treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or hormone therapy, similar to those used in female patients.

Men noticing any of these signs should seek medical advice promptly—awareness and early detection save lives.
