Memorial Match to Honour Louis Holtz, Promising Cheltenham Footballer

This Sunday at Bishop’s Cleeve FC’s Kayte Lane, a special memorial football match will be held to honour Louis Holtz, a talented young player from Cheltenham Town Development Centre who tragically passed away earlier this year. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 pm.

The event, known as the inaugural Louis Holtz Memorial Match, brings together friends, family, former teammates, and coaches in a heartfelt tribute to the popular teenager. Organizers hope the match will become an annual occasion to celebrate Louis’ life while supporting important charities.

Louis joined the Cheltenham Town Development Centre during the 2023/24 season and had also played for grassroots clubs Prestbury Phantoms and Whaddon United Youth. Remembered not only for his skill on the pitch but also for his warm personality and infectious smile, Louis left a lasting impact on everyone around him.

After his passing, members of the Cheltenham Town Development Centre united to support one another and reflect on how deeply Louis touched their lives. James Duckworth, Hereford Development Centre manager and Under-18s lead, emphasized that Sunday’s match is dedicated to celebrating Louis’ legacy.

“Louis was a genuine, caring, funny, and talented young man whose presence will be strongly felt during this event,” Duckworth shared. “His loss left us all in disbelief, and our hearts remain with his family—Aska, Steve, and Pascal. Organizing this memorial match is our way of honouring our dear friend.”

The match will feature a Cheltenham Town Select XI against the Prestbury Phantoms Under-18s. The ‘Select XI’ format was designed to include former teammates who have moved on from Cheltenham Town, allowing many who shared Louis’ football journey to participate.

“There have been many requests from Louis’ former teammates to be part of the match. The rolling substitutions will ensure everyone gets time on the field to pay tribute,” Duckworth explained. “Louis was immensely proud to represent Cheltenham Town. We are honoured that his family will be with us on the day.”

Proceeds from the memorial match will be split between Winston’s Wish, a children’s bereavement charity, and Sunflowers Suicide Support Gloucestershire, both of which provide vital aid to families and communities affected by grief.

The past year has been an emotional one for the Cheltenham Town squad, who paid tribute to Louis throughout the season, including a minute’s silence during Academy and Development Centre fixtures and attendance at his funeral.

Duckworth reflected on the resilience the group has shown: “Despite tough times this season, both on and off the field, the unity and strength of this group have been remarkable. Saying goodbye to Louis was our lowest point, but it brought everyone together.”

Supporters are warmly invited to attend the match, celebrate Louis’ life, and contribute to the charities that help families facing bereavement and loss. Louis’ memory continues to inspire all who knew him, demonstrating the enduring power of friendship and community.
