The three remaining members of Longhope Parish Council have weathered a recent vote urging their removal, maintaining their positions amid ongoing challenges. The council has faced significant turmoil in recent years, including multiple resignations and several code of conduct complaints.
Earlier this year, the council publicly acknowledged financial irregularities in their accounts, heightening tensions in the community. In response, residents organized a parish poll to express their confidence—or lack thereof—in the current councillors.
At a recent public meeting, 11 out of 40 attendees voted to initiate formal proceedings to remove the three remaining members. However, the non-binding parish poll held yesterday revealed a different sentiment. Out of 1,332 eligible voters, only 12.7 percent participated.

Voters were asked if they believed the remaining councillors were properly representing the parish and deserved to remain in office. A majority of 104 voted in favor, while 61 disagreed. Similarly, 101 voters felt the councillors acted appropriately and respected their positions, contrasted with 63 who did not share this view.
According to a January letter from the Forest of Dean District Council’s monitoring officer, several complaints had been filed against the council over the past year. The officer noted that in two instances, the behaviour was serious enough to warrant further action under different circumstances. However, it was deemed not in the public interest to pursue investigations that might deepen divisions within the community, which currently seeks stability.
Additionally, voters were asked whether they thought there was a public interest in having the district council’s monitoring officer conduct a thorough investigation into any code of conduct breaches by the councillors. This motion was rejected by 95 to 69 votes.
Despite ongoing controversies, the outcome of the vote indicates that a significant portion of the community prefers to allow the existing council members to continue their work, hoping for stability and progress in Longhope.
