A fresh culinary addition has opened at Gloucester Food Dock, introducing authentic South Indian street food to the vibrant waterfront setting. Mazala Dosa, after nearly a year of anticipation, welcomed its first customers on 1 September, joining an eclectic mix of twelve independent cafés and restaurants offering diverse global cuisines including Thai, Japanese, Mexican, Italian, and American dishes.
Located in unit 13, the two-storey restaurant boasts stunning views over the historic docks, blending traditional South Indian design elements with the characterful Victorian architecture that features exposed brickwork and timber beams. The menu celebrates popular street food favourites such as dosa, vada, uthappam, and kothu.
Mazala Dosa sets itself apart not only through its authentic flavours but also through innovation; it will be among the first establishments in Gloucestershire to employ autonomous robots to assist with delivering dishes directly to customers' tables.

Owner Omer Rahim expressed enthusiasm about bringing the rich culinary traditions of South India to Gloucester. He said: “We’re excited to bring the rich flavours and traditions of South Indian cuisine to Gloucester Food Dock. Our aim is to create an experience that combines authentic food, warm hospitality and modern innovation, all within one of the county’s most unique waterside locations.”
Highlighting the inspiration behind the restaurant, Rahim noted that South Indian cuisine remains under-represented in the UK despite its health benefits and cultural significance. “Living in the UK for more than two decades now, one thing that I have realised is that South Indian food is not represented enough at all. It’s healthy food, it’s fermented, it’s good for your gut. I just wanted to bring our South Indian food to the UK people. It’s very important for us to talk about the stories of authentic South Indian food, and what better way to discuss the food than cooking it for our customers?”
Ken Elliott, co-founder of Gloucester Food Dock, welcomed Mazala Dosa’s arrival as a fantastic addition to the area’s growing independent food community. Mazala Dosa is open from 12pm to 9pm, Tuesday through Sunday, ready to serve locals and visitors alike in a unique waterfront atmosphere.
