Countryfile presenter Matt Baker has shared a heartfelt reflection on how he has come to see a new side of his wife and TV co-star, Nicola Baker. The couple’s journey began over 20 years ago after meeting at a disco-themed show in Cleethorpes, where Matt was performing as part of a 1970s tribute group. He recalls how it was love at first sight when he first saw Nicola at one of those club nights.
Married since 2004, Matt and Nicola have two children and also star together on Channel 4’s documentary series Matt Baker: Our Farm in the Dales. But beyond their on-screen partnership, Matt recently revealed how Nicola’s life has taken an exciting turn that breathed new energy into their relationship.
Speaking on Gabby Logan’s Mid Point podcast, Matt recounted Nicola’s journey from pursuing physio and medical interests to continuing to nurture her long-time passion for writing. Though writing began as a hobby, Nicola has now achieved a significant milestone by securing a publishing deal for a series of four children’s books.

Matt enthusiastically described the change he has witnessed since Nicola embraced this new chapter: “She’s flying now and it’s done her so much good.” When asked if he sees a “different woman” in Nicola, he confirmed, adding, “I’m so excited for her and so proud of her.”
Nicola’s book series, A Whistledown Farm Adventure, draws inspiration from their own farm life. The stories follow a young girl, Ava, whose parents go abroad for medical work. Ava stays with her aunt and uncle on a farm, embarking on a journey of discovery and uncovering her unique gifts and love for the rural lifestyle — themes that resonate with viewers familiar with the Bakers’ Channel 4 series.
Meanwhile, fans can look forward to Matt’s return to BBC One this weekend on Countryfile. Joining Margherita Taylor in Herefordshire, they will explore innovative agricultural techniques, continuing the show’s tradition of highlighting cutting-edge farming practices.
Countryfile airs this evening at 5.30 pm on BBC One.
