Matt Baker Reveals Which BBC Co-Star Found His Dance Moves ‘Annoying’ During Intense Strictly Come Dancing Run

Matt Baker, the beloved Countryfile presenter with over 30 years of experience on British television, recently shared a candid insight from his time on Strictly Come Dancing that fans might find surprising. Despite his smooth TV career—from Blue Peter globe-trotting to interviewing famed celebrities on The One Show—Matt admits he sparked irritation in one iconic BBC figure.

Back in 2010, Matt took part in the BBC’s celebrity dance competition Strictly Come Dancing, finishing impressively as runner-up alongside professional partner Aliona Vilani. The intense nature of the show reminded him of his youth as a gifted gymnast before anemia forced him to quit the sport at age 14.

Matt’s routines on Strictly showcased his acrobatic skills, including backflips and somersaults, which stood out in a ballroom setting. These moves, however, didn’t win over the head judge Len Goodman, known for his traditional views on ballroom technique. “He used to call my backflips flip flops!” Matt recalled with a smile during an interview with Wiltshire Farm Foods.

The demanding schedule of Strictly meant Matt had to master multiple dances as the competition progressed, balancing technical proficiency with entertainment value. Despite the challenge, he says the experience was rewarding, pushing him physically while allowing him to showcase a different side of his talents.

Matt’s background in performance extends beyond TV presenting. While studying drama at Queen Margaret University, he starred as “Butch Vendor,” an LA bartender in a disco-themed comedy show called Disco Inferno, where he first met his wife Nicola. The exuberant role required flamboyant costumes and plenty of physical prowess—skills that would later translate into his dance routines on Strictly.

In addition to Strictly, Matt’s versatile career includes appearances on A Song For Europe, City Hospital, Animal Rescue Live, and significant contributions to the 2012 London Olympics coverage. His connection to Countryfile goes beyond the studio; his family’s farming roots inspired the memorable show Our Farm in the Dales, where he helped renovate the family farmhouse to accommodate his parents’ needs.

Reflecting on his diverse journey in entertainment and farming, Matt cherishes the treasured moments spent with his parents, highlighting his authenticity and humble roots. From daring dance floors to the rolling countryside, Matt Baker continues to captivate audiences across the UK with his genuine warmth and enduring talent.
