Matt Baker Opens Up About Spending More Time Apart from Wife Amid New Career Paths

Countryfile presenter Matt Baker and his wife Nicola have shared insights into how their lives have evolved as Nicola steps away from farm duties to focus on her blossoming career as a children’s book author.

The couple, who have been married for over 20 years, rose to public attention through the Channel 4 show Our Farm in the Dales, which follows their adventures managing a sheep farm in the Durham hills. While Matt continues his television work, Nicola has transitioned from her role as a physiotherapist to becoming a published author, a long-held passion turned full-time pursuit.

Nicola has released three children’s books so far, including the first, A Whistledown Farm Adventure: Finding Hope, published last February. Her follow-ups, Rescuing Ruby and Meeting Meg, have gained further acclaim, with a fourth book in the pipeline. As Matt travels for his TV commitments and Nicola focuses on her writing, the couple acknowledges that they now spend more time apart than ever before.

During a recent appearance on Lorraine, the discussion touched on how this time apart affects their relationship. Lorraine observed, “You go off doing your own thing writing the books and you go off doing your own things around Britain, so there are times where you are apart. But, don’t you think sometimes that works?”

Matt responded candidly, “We’re such doers in our lives, and we’re so supportive of what each other wants to do, we’ve just found our way through.” Nicola added that despite their busy schedules, they prioritize their moments together: “We make the most of the time that we have together and prioritise that and make the most of that.”

Their love story began unexpectedly when Matt met Nicola at a disco in Cleethorpes. Today, they share a strong bond and are proud parents to their two children, Molly and Luke.

Fans of Matt can look forward to his upcoming appearance on Countryfile, airing Sunday, July 12 at 7 pm on BBC Two, where he teams up with Sammi Kinghorn in East Devon, alongside Adam Henson tending to his Cotswolds farm animals.
