Dame Mary Berry, renowned former judge of The Great British Bake Off, recently opened up on the Lessons From Our Mothers podcast about her relaxed approach to food, sharing her favourite simple snack and a treasured family recipe.
Mary revealed she is “not too fussed” about what she eats daily, often enjoying a humble snack of toast with marmalade. She elaborated, “Paul, my husband, certainly doesn’t cook. He’s awfully good at getting the wine out for me. Whenever I’ve been away or filming, as soon as he hears the door, a glass is ready on the table.”
The 90-year-old culinary icon also reflected on the enduring 58-year love story with her husband Paul Hunnings, whom she married in 1966 after three marriage proposals. Together, they have three children: Thomas, Annabel, and William, who sadly passed away in 1989.

When asked about a recipe that represents “family, love, and children,” Mary fondly described her mother’s quick bread and butter pudding. Drawing on her own method, she said, “I take white bread, whether stale or not, trim off the crusts, and put lots of butter on. I butter the dish and layer sultanas and demerara sugar at the base. Then I do alternating layers of rum, butter, demerara sugar, and sultanas. I’ve learned not to put sultanas on top because they burn.”
She continues, “Pour a mix of egg and milk over it, soak for half an hour, and bake. It puffs up like a soufflé and tastes wonderful served hot from the oven.”
Mary also paid tribute to her mother’s remarkable longevity, who lived to 105. She attributed this to her mother’s positivity and caring nature: “She lived a long life because she was very positive and had a full life, always looking after and caring for others.”
