Content creator Peter Green, known online as GreenoEats, recently visited Tony’s Pie and Mash shop to see why it’s a favourite of football legend David Beckham. Located in Waltham Cross, this traditional pie shop has a rich history and a loyal following, including Beckham, who has been spotted there with his son Romeo, embracing his East London roots.
Peter ordered classic pie, mash, and liquor—a parsley sauce—as well as pie, mash, and gravy, rounding off his meal with tea and a traditional pudding. The total bill came to just £17.45.
He began by tasting the pie and liquor, seasoning it with chilli vinegar and black pepper. Praising the mash, he said it was “good and thick” without any lumps. “That pepper and little bit of chili vinegar, that hits the spot, it really does,” he noted.

Next up was the minced beef pie, which he described as “comfort food at its finest.” Peter highlighted the liquor’s strong parsley flavour and its thick, slightly gelatinous texture, calling it “gloopy but it just works.” When it came to the beef pie itself, he summed up his experience in one word: “phenomenal.”
Comparing the two sauces, Peter found tasting the gravy intriguing as well. He described it as a “really nice, rich, flavoursome gravy” with a thickness similar to the liquor. “It’s got a really good flavour, like an onion gravy without the onion in it,” he said. “If you got that in a chippy, you’d be really happy.”
Faced with a tough decision between liquor and gravy, Peter finally leaned toward the liquor, appreciating its lighter touch compared to the heartier gravy. He praised the pies themselves for their soft bottoms and crispy tops, noting that customers could even request a more burnt, extra-crispy crust if they preferred.
To finish, Peter enjoyed a school cake with custard, calling it “proper traditional grub.” Overall, he gave high marks to the quality and authenticity of Tony’s offerings.
Tony’s Pie and Mash isn’t just famous for Beckham’s patronage; TV personality Danny Dyer is also a well-known fan. When asked about his favourite restaurant, Dyer praised Tony’s Waltham Abbey location for its unchanged, classic charm. “There’s nothing quite like a f*****g pie and mash to start your day,” he exclaimed, describing his go-to order: a double double with plenty of liquor, chilli vinegar, and white pepper.
