Liam Dennett, a 43-year-old from Andoversford near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, found solace and renewed purpose through metal detecting after enduring devastating family tragedies. Struggling with mental health challenges following the loss of his father and younger brother, Liam turned to metal detecting as a coping mechanism. What began as a personal escape soon evolved into something greater: the founding of the Gloucestershire Metal Detecting Club (GMDC).
Founded three years ago, the GMDC has grown from a small group of enthusiasts into a vibrant community of over 4,000 members across Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds. Liam passionately describes the club’s mission as more than just hunting for historical artifacts—it is about creating a supportive environment where members can connect, find peace, and look after their mental wellbeing.
“Metal detecting gave me peace, purpose, and direction during some of the darkest chapters of my life,” Liam shares. “Walking through fields with just me and my detector helped clear my mind. Starting the club allowed me to share that feeling and build a community where people could support each other.”

The club thrives on connection and mutual support. Key to its success is Danny Wright, 43, from Cheltenham, who joined as a member and soon became an admin. Danny supported Liam through his struggles, and their friendship exemplifies the club’s deeper purpose beyond the hobby.
Together, they not only unearth fascinating historical finds—such as gold coins and a Saxon strap end, now donated to Cirencester Museum—but also foster genuine bonds. Liam emphasizes that the club is not-for-profit; member contributions go directly to landowners and farmers who allow access to their fields.
“We dig for history,” Liam says, “but we also dig deep for each other. That’s what makes GMDC special. It’s a place where being outdoors, sharing a passion, and supporting one another helps heal minds and hearts.”
Through tragedy, Liam discovered a real treasure: a community united by history, friendship, and hope.
