Man Pleads Guilty to Causing Death of Motorcyclist While Driving Over Double the Drink-Drive Limit

A Gloucestershire man, Ashley Quinton, 38, has admitted to causing the death of 18-year-old motorcyclist Tyler Durn by driving while more than twice the legal alcohol limit. Quinton pleaded guilty to causing death by driving without due care and attention in Gloucester Crown Court on January 9.

Police breathalysed Quinton at the scene of the collision on May 19, 2023, in Brockworth and recorded 76 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath—more than double the legal limit of 35 micrograms. At the time, Quinton was driving a Vauxhall Vivaro van.

Tyler Durn, a father of one, was riding a blue Suzuki motorcycle on Ermin Street when the fatal collision occurred. Emergency services pronounced him dead at the scene. Investigations revealed Tyler had been travelling at speeds between 66mph and 76mph on a road with a 30mph speed limit.

Judge Rupert Lowe described the case as “extremely sensitive” and extended his condolences to Tyler’s family. He emphasized that Tyler’s excessive speed and Quinton’s impaired driving were both significant factors leading to the tragedy.

Quinton was granted conditional bail and has been disqualified from driving. He is set to be sentenced on March 6 at Gloucester Crown Court. Sgt Williams of Gloucestershire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Team urged the public to avoid driving after consuming any alcohol, highlighting the devastating consequences.
