Man Dies in Fatal A417 Crash Near Birdlip

A fatal collision on the A417 Birdlip bypass claimed the life of a man in his 40s early Sunday morning, February 1. Gloucestershire Constabulary reported that emergency services were alerted at approximately 9:40 a.m. following a crash involving a car transporter and a Honda Civic.

The Honda Civic’s driver, a Gloucester resident, sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have informed his next of kin, offering support through specially trained officers.

Three passengers in the vehicle—a woman and two young children—were rushed to a hospital in Bristol for treatment. The driver of the car transporter was assessed at the scene and sustained no serious injuries.

Authorities imposed multiple road closures, affecting the A417 between Cirencester and Gloucester, including the Air Balloon roundabout, M5 junction 11a slip road, B4070 Buckholt Road junction, and Twelve Bells junction. These closures are expected to remain for several hours as investigations continue.

Investigating officers are urging witnesses to come forward and request anyone with relevant dashcam footage to contact Gloucestershire Constabulary. Information can be submitted online, referencing incident 133 of February 1.
