Malcolm in the Middle Star Justin Berfield Opens Up About Leaving Hollywood After 20 Years

Justin Berfield, best known for his role as Reese in the iconic sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, has finally broken his two-decade silence about why he stepped away from Hollywood. With the highly anticipated four-episode revival set to premiere next month, Berfield recently gave his first-ever podcast interview on The Joe Vulpis Podcast, revealing insights into his life after the show ended.

At 40, Justin explained that podcasts weren’t even popular when the original series wrapped up, and his main reason for avoiding public appearances was simple: he wasn’t working on new projects and preferred to focus on being a stay-at-home dad. “I’m just chilling at home with my kid,” he said. “Unless I have something to talk about, I don’t want to go on a podcast.”

Though he withdrew from acting, Berfield has stayed connected to the entertainment industry behind the scenes, working as an on-set producer and writer. He admitted he was content with his life away from the spotlight, with no desire to revisit the past until the revival came together.

After Malcolm in the Middle ended in 2006, Justin and his wife Liza moved to Colorado for a change of scenery. He fondly recalls that period as a time to enjoy seclusion and pursue hobbies like fly fishing. “I just wanted to live somewhere else,” he shared. The family eventually moved back to Los Angeles after three years.

Berfield also acknowledged that acting roles were scarce once the series ended, but he never aspired to be a major Hollywood star. Instead, he embraced his role as a devoted father of two and valued his quieter life away from acting.

The upcoming revival, titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, will feature Justin reprising his role alongside Frankie Muniz as Malcolm, Christopher Masterson as Francis, and Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek reprising their roles as Hal and Lois. Justin mentioned that reuniting with the cast felt natural, as if no time had passed. “It felt like a really long hiatus, but once we were back on set, it was like time stopped,” he reflected.

Set to premiere on Disney+ on April 10, the revival explores Malcolm’s complicated relationship with his family. The plot follows Malcolm as he reluctantly returns to his family’s world to attend his parents’ 40th anniversary party, after years of keeping his distance.

Fans can look forward to heartfelt humor and a nostalgic return to a beloved family dynamic in the Malcolm in the Middle revival.
