Make the Most of the Warm Weather in Gloucester’s Best Beer Garden

As the sun shines brightly and temperatures rise, there’s no better way to enjoy the warmth than relaxing in a vibrant beer garden with a cold pint in hand. Tucked away in the heart of Gloucester’s city centre, between a barber shop and a tattoo parlour, lies a hidden gem boasting one of the city’s finest outdoor spaces—Robert Raikes House.

Situated at the top of Southgate Street, directly opposite the historic St Mary de Crypt Church, Robert Raikes House is housed in a stunning timber-framed building dating back to the 16th century. Originally home to Robert Raikes, who began publishing the Gloucester Journal here in 1722, the building has served various purposes over the centuries including a merchant’s house and shop. Since 1975, it has been a welcoming pub, formerly known as The Golden Cross.

Today, owned by North Yorkshire brewery Samuel Smith since 2006, Robert Raikes House invites patrons to enjoy what it proudly claims as Gloucester’s best beer garden. A sign outside warmly invites visitors to step through its doors and take in the charming outdoor setting.

This spring, the pub garden received a dedicated refresh. The patio underwent chemical cleaning and de-weeding, all tables and chairs were repainted, and new parasols were installed, enhancing both comfort and atmosphere.

Jay Larner, the pub manager who has overseen the establishment for the past three years, shares, “The garden’s been incredibly popular during the sunny days. It’s a cool, shaded spot thanks to the high walls, and the new parasols add great comfort. We’re wheelchair accessible both inside and out, making it welcoming for everyone. The vibe is relaxed and friendly—our staff always strive to make guests feel at home.”

On days when the heat becomes too intense—Gloucester is expecting a peak of 38°C—patrons can retreat indoors where the pub is fully air-conditioned, ensuring a comfortable experience year-round.

Samuel Smith pubs also encourage guests to enjoy a ‘digital detox.’ As Jay explains, “We’re not banning phone use altogether. Sharing photos or having a quick look is fine. But we ask customers to avoid playing music or videos on their devices, so everyone can enjoy a peaceful environment.”

The pub offers a selection of quality beers brewed directly by Samuel Smith, priced between £2.90 and £5. Pair your drink with a hearty meal, where starters start from £6.95 and main courses from £12.95, all served in a warm and historic setting.

Open Tuesday to Saturday from 12pm to 11pm, Sunday from 12pm to 6pm, and Monday from 12pm to 6:30pm, Robert Raikes House is the perfect place to savor the city’s warm weather while enjoying great food, drink, and history.
