Major Revamp of GL1 Leisure Centre Kicks Off This Year with New Gym and Soft Play Area

Gloucester’s GL1 Leisure Centre is set for a significant transformation beginning this September. As part of a wider £8 million investment by Gloucester City Council, the Bruton Way site will see a comprehensive upgrade designed to modernize its facilities and foster a healthier, more active community.

The refurbishment will deliver a brand-new gym, an enhanced soft play area, exciting new water play features, a revamped reception hub, refurbished changing rooms, and cutting-edge equipment. In addition, the women’s only gym will reopen next year, refreshed with new flooring, improved air conditioning, and enhanced security measures.

These improvements, managed in partnership with Freedom Leisure, aim to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where residents and visitors can come together to support their physical and mental wellbeing.

Councillor Caroline Courtney, the city’s leisure portfolio holder, emphasized the importance of quality leisure facilities for the community. “GL1 has been long overdue an upgrade. This refurbishment, including the new gym, will provide an outstanding experience that our city deserves – a place for people to get active and improve their wellbeing,” she said.

Freedom Leisure’s Chief Executive, Ivan Horsfall Turner, expressed enthusiasm for the project: “This investment marks a significant step forward for GL1, enhancing it as a community asset. The upgraded facilities will offer modern, inviting spaces and exciting new attractions for families, ensuring GL1 meets the community’s evolving needs for years to come.”

Opposition leader Councillor Stephanie Chambers welcomed the improvements, highlighting the importance of maintaining the women’s only gym. “We appreciate the work of Councillor Sajid Patel in ensuring these facilities are retained and refreshed,” she stated. “GL1 is not just a leisure venue; it is where children learn vital swimming and water safety skills, which are crucial given the risks associated with open water.”

GL1 has already seen upgrades including energy-efficient lighting, new indoor cycling bikes, and pool floor refurbishment. The introduction of Gravity Reformer Pilates classes has expanded the fitness options available, supported by specialist equipment.

Contractors are currently finalizing design plans to prepare for the refurbishment kickoff in September, with completion planned for autumn 2027. The transformation promises to make GL1 a modern, inclusive hub for fitness, wellbeing, and family enjoyment across Gloucester.
