Major Maintenance on A40 Over Bridge to Cause Significant Delays

The A40 Over Bridge, a vital dual carriageway linking Gloucester, Cheltenham, Ross on Wye, and connecting England with Wales, is set to undergo crucial maintenance beginning June 2026. With approximately 5,000 vehicles crossing the bridge during peak hours, National Highways will invest £7 million to carry out essential repairs aimed at extending the structure’s lifespan and preventing future unplanned closures.

Constructed in the 1970s, the Over Bridge requires comprehensive work that includes concrete repairs, installation of new waterproofing, improved drainage systems, and other structural enhancements. The maintenance project is scheduled to run from June 29, 2026, through March 2027.

Terry Robinson, Engineering Lead for National Highways, emphasized the importance of this investment: “Much of the motorway and major A-road infrastructure we manage was built over 60 years ago. Upgrading the A40 at Over is critical to keep the route safe and operational for future generations. We anticipate significant delays and encourage drivers to plan ahead and consider alternative routes, especially during peak times.”

Preparation for the works will commence on June 8, starting with the installation of a site compound on the verge between the slip road from A417 Over Causeway to A40 Westbound. The slip road will be closed for the entire duration of the project.

The maintenance will be carried out using a combination of lane closures, contraflow systems, and a reduced speed limit of 30 mph to ensure the safety of both motorists and workers. Some overnight closures will be necessary, with clearly marked diversion routes in place to manage traffic flow.

To minimize disruptions, a phased traffic management plan will include CCTV monitoring and a free recovery service throughout the project. Temporary traffic lights at Over Roundabout may be implemented if required, based on ongoing traffic assessments.

Access for residents and businesses will be maintained, though right-turn movements will be temporarily restricted, necessitating short diversions via A40 Highnam and A40 Over roundabouts. The eastbound bus lane will remain operational up to Horseshoe Drive before merging into the temporary road layout.

This essential maintenance will ensure the continued safety and reliability of the A40 Over Bridge for many years to come.
