Drivers in the Gloucestershire village of Tirley are set to face a significant diversion as a one-mile section of the B4213 road undergoes overnight resurfacing works. The affected stretch, located between Haw Bridge and the junction with Wainlode Lane, will be closed each night from 7pm to 7am starting May 12 and continuing for five nights, excluding the weekend, with work expected to finish on Monday, May 18.
In addition to the B4213 closure, Wainlode Lane will also be closed along a one-mile section leading down to The Red Lion pub. Despite the short length of road affected, drivers will need to follow a diversion route spanning nearly 20 miles. This detour takes drivers almost to Gloucester before looping through Over and north via Hartpury, reconnecting near the old Haw Bridge Inn pub.
While alternative, shorter routes exist, the Gloucestershire County Council’s Highways team has designated this extended diversion as the most suitable route for all vehicle types, ensuring drivers remain on comparable road classes.
During the closure hours, no traffic will be allowed within the affected zone, and residents who typically park there must find alternative parking options. Pedestrian access to properties within the closure will remain available.
In correspondence to residents, the council emphasized the importance of safety during these works, stating that the closure area extends beyond the resurfacing site to accommodate machinery and materials needed for the project. They acknowledged the inconvenience but assured residents that the timing and duration were chosen to minimize disruption while ensuring the safety of both workers and the public.
