Major 20-Mile Diversion Implemented as Tirley Road Closes for Nighttime Resurfacing

Drivers near Tirley in Gloucestershire should prepare for a significant detour as a one-mile section of the B4213 closes overnight for essential resurfacing work. The closure, taking effect from May 12 to May 18 (excluding the weekend), will run each night from 7 pm to 7 am.

The affected stretch runs from Haw Bridge to the junction with Wainlode Lane, extending closures along Wainlode Lane down to The Red Lion pub. Although this closure impacts a relatively short portion of road, Gloucestershire County Council has established a nearly 20-mile diversion route to guide traffic safely around the work zone.

This detour leads drivers close to Gloucester, then through Over and back up north via Hartpury, reconnecting near the old Haw Bridge Inn pub. While shorter routes exist, the approved diversion ensures all vehicles use comparable road types, maintaining safety and accessibility.

During the closure hours, no vehicles will be permitted within the work zone, and residents who usually park on the road must find alternate arrangements. However, pedestrian access to properties remains available.

The council’s highways team explained in a letter to locals that the comprehensive closure is necessary due to the scale of equipment and materials involved in resurfacing. They emphasized that safety is the priority and thanked residents for their understanding, noting efforts have been made to complete the works swiftly and at a time to minimize disruption.
