Magnum Ice Cream Company Commits £50m to Modernise Gloucester’s Wall’s Factory

The Magnum Ice Cream Company has unveiled a transformative £50 million investment to upgrade its Wall’s factory in Gloucester, securing the city’s place as a key hub for ice cream production well into the future. This major enhancement is part of Magnum’s broader £300 million supply chain overhaul, aimed at boosting production efficiency and capacity globally.

Located on Corinium Avenue in Barnwood, the Gloucester site plays a vital role in manufacturing beloved ice cream brands including Viennetta, Twister, Solero, and Magnum. The planned upgrade includes a complete rebuild of the factory’s mix plant, the addition of advanced blending technologies, and the installation of new high-speed production lines for flagship products. These advances are expected to amplify output by 50% by 2027.

The Gloucester City Council’s recent approval paved the way for these enhancements, underscoring local support for a project that promises to revitalize the city’s manufacturing sector. The investment was warmly received by government officials, including Investment Minister Jason Stockwood and local MP Alex McIntyre, who highlighted its significance for job security and regional economic growth.

“This investment underlines Magnum’s long-term commitment to the UK, positioning Gloucester as a centre of innovation, quality, and sustainability,” said Peter ter Kulve, CEO of The Magnum Ice Cream Company. Jamie Farrell, Head of Country UK&I, added, “Our focus on sustainability will see energy efficiency gains of 5% and a 20% reduction in food waste, reflecting our dedication to responsible growth.”

The Gloucester plant, established in 1959, is Europe’s second-largest ice cream factory, producing over 600 million ice creams annually. It is a cornerstone of the local community, employing nearly 500 people directly and supporting many more through local partnerships.

With this substantial investment, Magnum is not only enhancing production but also committing to upskilling its workforce and embedding sustainability practices. This strategic upgrade ensures Gloucester remains a flagship site, capable of meeting evolving consumer demands while contributing to economic stability and growth in the region.
