Magical Lords of the Rings-Inspired Forest Named One of the UK’s Most Beautiful Places

The Forest of Dean, nestled in Gloucestershire, has rightfully earned its place among the United Kingdom’s most beautiful natural wonders. Far from the manicured gardens of the south or the craggy peaks of the north, this ancient woodland radiates an enchanting, timeless magic.

Recently, the Forest of Dean was officially named one of the 50 Most Beautiful Places in the UK for 2026 by the global travel authority Big 7 Travel. This recognition places it alongside iconic landscapes like the Scottish Highlands and the Lake District, underscoring its national significance.

One of the forest’s most famous areas, Puzzlewood, is renowned for inspiring the legendary J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien drew from Puzzlewood’s gnarled trees, moss-covered mounds, and twisting wooden bridges to bring to life the mystical Fangorn Forest, Mirkwood, and the Old Forest in his epic Lord of the Rings saga. This connection further cements the Forest of Dean’s reputation as a place where fantasy and reality beautifully intertwine.

Notably, the Forest of Dean is the only location from the South West to break into the top 10 and the sole Gloucestershire site featured in the overall top 50. Big 7 Travel praised the forest as “one of the best-preserved woodlands in England,” a sanctuary that has inspired countless artists, writers, and dreamers over the years.

The annual list from Big 7 Travel highlights Britain’s most striking destinations—from Scotland’s panoramic Highlands and picturesque coastal gems to quaint historic villages. For 2026, the Forest of Dean proudly stands at third place, joining the ranks of some of the UK’s most spectacular natural landscapes.
