A serious motorbike crash on the M5 motorway in Gloucestershire led to a temporary closure between junctions 9 and 11 on Tuesday, May 12. The incident, which occurred around 9:50 am, involved a single biker who sustained potentially serious injuries. Emergency services, including the air ambulance, responded swiftly to the scene.
The northbound carriageway was closed from Gloucester to Tewkesbury, causing heavy traffic and significant delays. Many motorists experienced nearly two hours of standstill traffic before the trapped vehicles were gradually released. Meanwhile, the southbound side was briefly shut to allow the air ambulance to land but has since fully reopened.
During the closure, National Highways implemented a diversion route marked by solid triangle signs to guide drivers away from the affected stretch of motorway. Authorities are advising drivers to follow these diversion signs and avoid the area if possible while investigations continue.

Gloucestershire Police confirmed the biker’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening and urged anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward by completing an online witness form, referencing incident 142 of May 12.
The motorway has since reopened in all directions, but authorities remind drivers to stay vigilant and expect some residual delays as normal traffic flow resumes.
