M48 Severn Bridge Closed Due to Severe Wind Gusts

The M48 Severn Bridge in Gloucestershire has been closed in both directions due to hazardous high winds, causing significant travel disruption for motorists. National Highways confirmed that the closure affects the section between junctions 1 and 2, advising drivers to use the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge as an alternative.

Strong gusts funnel across the M48, which lacks the modern wind barriers found on the Prince of Wales Bridge, leading to safety-related closures whenever wind speeds exceed approximately 40 knots (46 mph). If winds surge beyond 70 knots (80 mph), both bridges close, with traffic being rerouted via the M5, M50, A40, and A449.

This disruption follows a week of challenging weather conditions across the UK linked to Storm Goretti, which brought heavy rain, strong winds, and snow in some areas.

The Met Office forecasts continued wet and windy conditions through Sunday night with coastal gales and temperatures hovering around 6°C. On Monday, expect bright spells mixed with heavy showers from the southwest, easing later in the day with a high near 10°C.

Motorists are urged to anticipate delays, heed official updates, and consider alternative routes during this period of severe weather.
