M48 Severn Bridge Closed Due to Dangerous High Winds

The M48 Severn Bridge in Gloucestershire has been shut in both directions due to dangerously strong winds, prompting warnings of significant travel delays.

National Highways confirmed that the closure affects the stretch between junctions 1 and 2. Motorists have been advised to divert to the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge, which remains open and offers safer passage thanks to wind barriers that reduce the impact of gusts.

The older design of the M48 Severn Bridge leaves it vulnerable to high winds which can pose serious hazards. When wind speeds reach 40 knots (approximately 46 mph), the bridge is closed until conditions improve. In extreme cases, when winds exceed 70 knots (around 80 mph), both the Severn and Prince of Wales bridges are shut, with traffic rerouted via the M5, M50, A40, and A449.

This closure comes amid a week of challenging weather, including Storm Goretti, which has brought heavy rain, strong winds, and snow across parts of the UK.

The Met Office forecasts continued wet and windy conditions overnight Sunday, with heavy bursts of rain and coastal gales. Temperatures are expected to range between 6°C and 10°C, with showers persisting into Monday along with blustery but easing winds.

Drivers are urged to plan accordingly, expect delays, and stay updated on road conditions to ensure safety during travel.
